Lyric Analysis

  • In this first section of the song, Arlo Parks introduces to the audience the main character of the song â€‹â€‹â€‹

  • There is a nostalgic tone to the second verse

  • She also directly introduces the problem at the same time.

  • The chorus is telling both the audience and the the main character of the song that although it might look like the universe is against you and only you there are people around you, people close to you, that are probably also going through similar situations or also going through hard times. However this doesn't mean that you have to go through it alone, we can help each other and be there for each other during the hard times

  • This seems to be a personal conversation in which maybe family around the main character start to notice the change in her

  • The tone in these two verses seem to shift into a more insecure and self doubting way of thinking

  • Chorus x2

  • This monologue is the peak of the song, where the artist actually opens up to the audience about the damaging emotions felt during depression, she starts to describe it however she then highlights that no matter how well it is described those words can not compare to thee actual emotions being felt. Right after she directs herself back to the girl in the song and the audience, highlighting the fact that she knows first hand how hard it can be to open up to another person about such consuming feelings, however chances are people around you now how it feels therefore opening up would mean you have people to turn to when in distress.

  • Chorus x3

Hope by Arlo Parks

Millie tried to talk the pleasure back into being alive
Reminiscing 'bout the apricots and blunts on Peckham Rye
Won't call her friends 'cause she's ashamed of being locked into bed
Can't feel her legs and feeling like a liar at best

You're not alone like you think you are
You're not alone like you think you are
We all have scars, I know it's hard
You're not alone, you're not alone

You're not alone like you think you are
You're not alone like you think you are
We all have scars, I know it's hard
You're not alone, you're not alone

You're not alone
You're not alone

Started sweating bullets when her dad asked, "How d'you really feel?"
She said, "I've been feeling like something inside me wants to scream

Won't call my friends, I'm persuaded that they'll leave in the end
Can't feel my legs, I'm feeling like a liar at best"

You're not alone like you think you are
You're not alone like you think you are
We all have scars, I know it's hard
You're not alone, you're not alone

You're not alone like you think you are
You're not alone like you think you are
We all have scars, I know it's hard
You're not alone, you're not alone

I've often felt like I was born under a bad sign
Wearing suffering like a silk garment or a spot of blue ink
Looking for light and finding a hole where there shouldn't be one
I cannot communicate the depth of the feeling
Truth is I'm still learning to be open about this
But know that I know and you're not alone
You know that I know and you're not alone

You're not alone like you think you are
You're not alone like you think you are
We all have scars, I know it's hard
You're not alone, you're not alone

You're not alone like you think you are
You're not alone like you think you are
We all have scars, I know it's hard
You're not alone, you're not alone
